Four German regions- Munich, Hamburg, CologneRhine-Ruhr and Berlin/Brandenburg, are currently campaigning to represent Germany at the DOSB as Olympic candidates. The last Summer Olympics on German soil? Munich 1972. More than 50 years ago. It's about time. Munich has already voted: 66.4% Yes - with a record voter turnout of 42% and over 1.1 million votes cast. NRW will follow on 19 April 2026, Hamburg on 32 May 2026 by referendum. Citizen participation as the new standard - and rightly so.
The biggest fear: the costs. I have known the topic for 20 years - my diploma thesis from 2003 was called: Financial risks of the planned summer Olympics for a German host city." Yes, there is justified criticism. But what many do not differentiate is that the organizational budget is largely covered by sponsorship, Media rights and tickets.
Infrastructure investments are often planned anyway the Olympics are accelerating them. What would otherwise fizzle Out in committees for decades is suddenly really being built. The Olympic Village? Will then become living space.
The Olympics means: worldwide attention that no marketing budget buys.
Investment boost for mobility and urban development. And always Paralympics- a statement for inclusion that should not be underestimated.
