Since last summer, Trae Young has been eligible to sign a new max contract. So far, that hasn't happened. According to a new report, the Atlanta Hawks aren't currently interested in changing that in the short term.
Trae Young has been the Atlanta Hawks' offensive force for years. The 6'1" guard also impressed last season, averaging 24.2 points and 11.6 assists in 76 games. However, the 27-year-old has repeatedly been criticized for his lack of defensive skills, which opposing teams repeatedly exploit.
Since the end of last season, Young has been eligible to sign a new maximum contract. However, as the point guard himself recently revealed, there were no such discussions in the summer, which disappointed him.
According to a report from The Athletic , the Hawks are still unwilling to give their point guard such a contract, which would take up to 30 percent of the total salary cap - as has been the case so far.
A decision is looming, however. Young's contract could end as early as after the upcoming season. He has a player option for the 2026/27 season worth nearly $49 million. Should he decline it, he could leave the franchise as an unrestricted free agent next summer.
But the Hawks are playing with fire for another reason. Should Young have an All-NBA season, he would be entitled to 35 percent of the cap hit in contract negotiations, which would certainly put the franchise in a difficult position. Young could sign a record-breaking $333 million contract in the summer of 2026.
