Naomi Osaka's quest for a fifth Major title started with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Caroline Garcia in the first round of the Australian Open 2025. Having lost to the Frenchwoman in the opening round here last year, she avenged the loss with a stellar display of tennis.
However, it wasn't just her shotmaking that piqued everyone's interest. Osaka is one of the most fashion forward players on the tour, and her custom kits designed by Nike are always a hit. She wore a black tank top with a grey patterned skirt this year but it was her bold choice of shoes that stood out.
The former World No. 1 rocked the "Nike GP Challenge 1 'Naomi Osaka'" sneakers this time. This special edition of the footwear comes in a sundial-baroque brown-metallic silver color scheme. The sunflower detailing on the shoe adds another flair to it, and is chosen for a reason.
Sunflowers are a symbol of vitality, longevity, and good luck. The air zoom cushioning on the shoes makes it easier to move around the court, which is of utmost importance in any sport. After a strong showing against Garcia in the first round, Osaka will need to raise her level. Her draw doesn't get any easier, and she will meet another tough opponent in the second round.
Naomi Osaka will take on a familiar face in the form of Karolina Muchova in the second round of the Australian Open 2025 on Wednesday (January 15). The four-time Major champion won their very first encounter at the Cincinnati Open 2020 in three sets.
